The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center is the centerpiece of Cincinnati’s revitalized riverfront district, honoring the heroes who fought for freedom in years past, and those who continue to do so today. Rooted in stories of the American slave experience, the museum sheds light on global slavery and serves as a beacon of light for inclusive freedom worldwide.
The design and surrounding landscape of the Center reference the journey of slaves escaping across the land. Winding paths permeate the interior and extend to the north-south free-running walls of the site along the Ohio River. Curving forms, undulating building contours, and materials emphasizing weight, permanence, and earthiness recall the experience of overland flight and the exuberance of freedom pursued.
