Lincoln Teen Parent Center

Portland, Oregon

Lincoln High School’s Teen Parent Center stands as a thoughtfully crafted sanctuary amid a bustling urban environment. Nestled into the landscape opposite the mid-rise high school, this facility serves as a place of refuge alleviating the daily stressors faced by teen parents and their children. Like a bird’s nest offering protection to its chicks, the Center is a nurturing environment, fostering a sense of safety and calm.

Our design draws on the principles of Trauma-Informed Design, integrating awe and wonder into every element. The building’s exposed wood structure, abundant natural light through skylights, green roof, and seamless indoor/outdoor connectivity encourage play and connection to nature, even within an urban setting. Natural organic shapes, calming colors, and healthy materials ensure the Center supports its users and stands the test of time.

The Teen Parent Center is segmented into three age
groups—infants, crawlers, and toddlers—with a shared outdoor play space that inspires interaction and exploration. The Center’s strategic location, opposite the main school building, is intentional in reducing the stigma associated with being a teen parent and offers easy access for parents to visit their children throughout the day.
