This expansion to the University’s School of Music and Dance provides state-of-the-art performance, practice, classroom and student gathering spaces organized around a new outdoor courtyard. The new spaces mitigate the varying architectural expressions of the existing facility and bring a sense of order to the complex. Through an abundance of windows and clerestory glazing, students and faculty are visually connected to the greater campus community.
A new addition to the north of the existing facility houses the instrument rehearsal room, which features continuous clerestory glazing and a large window offering views of the southwest campus green, serves as a dynamic beacon for the school . This large ensemble rehearsal space, capable of seating an orchestra of 85 musicians, can easily be transformed via variable acoustic treatments into a jazz cabaret, banquet venue or 250-seat recital hall. The addition also accommodates percussion and jazz rehearsal rooms, faculty studios, practice rooms, and a master recording studio.
To the southeast of the existing facility, a new three-story addition contains classrooms, practice rooms and faculty studios. Forming the edge of a new courtyard, the first floor of the structure is built into the existing hillside and covered by a green roof. The second and third floors, rotated 90 degrees from the lower floor in order to minimize western exposure, house faculty studios and a lounge space.
