Oregon Coast House

Lincoln City, OR

Glowing like a lantern at night, Bora designed this modern beach house to offer a busy Portland family sanctuary, privacy, flexible guest space and an office sanctum. Built within the Salishan resort community – a collection of modernist homes developed by John Gray in 1961 – the home is clean and sculptural with an abundance of natural materials and hand-crafted details.

A splayed U-shaped design maximizes views and creates a private, protected courtyard. On the top floor, living spaces are oriented to the northeast toward the courtyard and Siletz Bay. Lifted above private sleeping quarters, the large, open great room takes in the spectacular views of the tidal marsh and bay through 15-foot window walls. Across the courtyard, a home office sits above the garage. The separation from the main living space creates a refuge for focused work.

We emphasized an easy, clean beach atmosphere, with a warm color palette, comfortable seating and a bright, exuberant art collection to create a modern sanctuary for the homeowners. Hemlock paneling and oak flooring, which swaths floors, walls and ceilings, lends warm, natural structure to the kitchen, dining and living spaces. Taken all together, the house and its surroundings are a rejuvenating haven on Pacific coast.
