Portland Public Schools’ Jefferson High School is more than a typical neighborhood school; for more than 100 years it has been an anchor of the Black community in Portland. This modernization is reimagining a new school on site that will both honor this history and support the next generation of students. Inclusive, culturally affirming teaching and learning spaces will restore Jefferson’s significance in the community as a place of academic excellence, athletic and arts legacy, and generational pride. Community outreach rooted in Design Justice principles at the project’s conceptual phase helped lay the groundwork for the school’s new design.
