Multnomah County’s new Fernhill Health Center is optimally located in the Portland Community College Opportunity Center, serving as an added amenity for the diverse community of Northeast Portland. Guided by design concepts reflecting the vibrancy of the local neighborhood, the clinic offers a range of spaces that are calming and supportive, especially to those who have experienced trauma or adversity.
Constructed of a mass timber structure and employing regionally sourced materials, the health clinic immerses occupants in a healthy, welcoming environment. Patient needs are centered throughout the design, which is easily navigable with clear patterns of movement from entry to exam room. Carefully orchestrated views and points of privacy uphold a safe visitor experience, while thoughtful considerations to the space’s maneuverability and the ease of patients and families guided planning and furnishings. The subtle contrast of materials, key locations that incorporate soft forms, and a color palette rooted in the Pacific Northwest work to create a positive experience that puts visitors at ease.
Patients are invited to move among the clinic’s comprehensive services without having to leave the patient area or facility, while signage and details are mindful of non-native English speakers so that all feel cared for and welcome.
