Portland, OR
Featuring ample resident amenities and a design that respects neighborhood connections through the site and to local parks, the Block 17 Apartments enhance
life at the street level and intentionally step back from adjacent public greenspaces with a double-height design.
Overlooking The Fields Park in Portland’s Pearl District, the apartments are comprised of two buildings sitting atop a shared below-grade parking structure. To reduce shading on the park, the 218-unit, 16-story high rise was located on the west half of the block. Adjacent to the park is a low-rise, 5-story wood-framed structure that includes 63 units.
The design actively engages the surrounding open-space network of the district and provides easy access to multi-modal transit options. Building upon precedents in the neighborhood, we incorporated a public pathway through the internal courtyard in the center of the block. Neighbors have verbalized appreciation for these alternative paths being maintained for public access, which allow for variation in the pedestrian experience.
