Belmont Library

Portland, OR

As one of the busiest libraries in Multnomah County with an active rotation of holds and pickups, Belmont Library is a community gem embodying the vibrant spirit of Southeast Portland. The project will preserve and renovate the original 1924 brick building, expanding the children’s collection with an interactive play area and a middle readers annex, while replacing its single-story north wing with a gabled two-story mass timber addition clad in a modern, complementary copper-like texture.

Drawing upon extensive community engagement, the design celebrates nature, choice, and delight. From the new accessible main entry into the open lobby–envisioned as a community living room where patrons can connect while browsing for books–patrons will be enfolded into a luminous, radiant experience that promotes community well-being, creativity, and conversation. The upper floor of the addition will be a vaulted, airy reading room that houses the main collection, open computer stations, flexible community rooms, study spaces, and a dedicated teen area. West-facing windows will mitigate afternoon sun glare, nurturing a cozy vibe with window seats and perches—a design feature inspired by community feedback.

The project will establish a strong civic presence, enhancing Belmont Library’s visibility along a busy city thoroughfare. Widened sidewalks, abundant bike parking, and benches will improve site access and safety while reinforcing the character of the pedestrian- and bike-friendly neighborhood.
