Stanford University – Science and Engineering Quad

Our master plan and subsequent design of Stanford’s Science and Engineering Quad (SEQ) established a home for the School of Engineering, and a base for their extensive partnerships across and beyond campus. The four interconnected buildings provide 600,000 square feet of flexible teaching, research, office, and social spaces on an 8.5 acre crossroads site between the Main Quad and School of Medicine. Working closely with the users, Bora created a complex that inspires and facilitates intersectional innovation across all the disciplines living on the Quad.

The first step in our planning process was defining a unified vision worthy sitting at the iconic campus core; our architecture needed to be referential to the beloved Stanford vernacular, and accommodating of modern, continuously changing uses. Our solution is grounded in the rich principles of the historic Olmsted plan. It’s also inspired by Stanford’s holistic approach to education, science, and research as the best means of addressing our most pressing global challenges.

Engaging with some of academia’s great problem solvers, we came away with two fundamental design objectives. First, our plan needed to inspire, attract and nurture the activity and complex thinking that powers innovation. Second, we needed to think beyond great classrooms, offices, labs and seamless technology. The deep design of spaces in between is what allows interaction and connection to take place, and important things to happen.

By directive of the Board of Trustees, we created a detailed prescriptive master plan document. It clearly defines the character and qualities of a new central precinct that impacts the entire campus experience. The final Quad architecture and landscape is a memorable place and adds a new layer of identity to this prestigious institution. Our rigorous sustainability criteria fueled a campus-wide initiative for sustainable development—one of the most aggressive and intelligent in the country. The organization and structure of the buildings allows cross-disciplinary and collaborative creativity to flourish. As President John Hennessey stated, “This kind of collaboration has enabled Stanford to assume a larger role in addressing global problems. We are already making a difference.”
