Texas Christian University – School of Music + Arts Precinct Plan

Texas Christian University – School of Music + Arts Precinct Plan

Bora’s School of Music (SOM) building fulfills a twenty-year vision for Texas Christian University, anchoring a new Arts Precinct by coalescing scattered music facilities into a single, iconic campus destination. Construction will begin in Spring 2018, with classes and performances set to commence in Fall 2020. A planned second phase will further consolidate performance, administrative, teaching, and practice spaces for the SOM.

We were challenged to transform a quiet corner of parking lots at the campus edge into a defined precinct and gateway for visitors. To activate the site, our design incorporates a north-facing, glass-enclosed lobby which opens onto an expansive covered porch. The “Creative Commons,” a new signature outdoor gathering space, connects to the existing Moudy Center for the Fine Arts.

Architecturally, our palette drew on TCU’s signature buff brick and limestone accents, while distinguishing the building through its form. We drew the central 700-seat Concert Hall up through the heart of the structure, where it soars to a height of 60 feet. A richly textured and illuminated cast-stone crown rings the top, celebrating the artistry of the building’s occupants.

Inside the wood-lined Concert Hall, we composed audience seating around all sides of the stage, creating a uniquely intimate connection between performers and patrons. This venue is surrounded by a pair of large rehearsal halls for ensemble programs, including 5,000 SF for band and 2,500 SF for orchestra. A suite for percussion instruction, faculty teaching studios, and student practice rooms also orbit the central performance space.

At once enabling the SOM to serve its growing program, and creating a dynamic presence for the arts, this project creates a regional performance space that will redefine TCU’s contributions to the larger artistic community. Our design balances exacting acoustic needs with transparency and visibility, amplifying the expression within, and showcasing TCU’s commitment to excellence in music education.

The Bora team has been an absolute delight to work with. Not only are they enormously talented, but they listen carefully, provide multiple solution options, and work with the client to create the best possible facility given the budget available. I have worked with many architectural firms and professionals over the years; Bora is unquestionably the best.
