Plano Independent School District – Fine Arts Center

Plano Independent School District – Fine Arts Center

Plano Independent School District wanted to nurture artistic and creative expression for their students within a single, state-of-the-art facility. Working in collaboration with executive architect Perkins + Will, Bora is leading the design of the new Fine Arts Center, which will stand as a bright, beautiful invitation to the entire Plano ISD community, reflecting their commitment to the transformative power of arts education.

Bora is creating a building that will serve all middle school and high school students across the district who participate in fine and performing arts programs. The community also wants the ability to host state University Interscholastic League competitions and major regional events, which previously required the district to rent external venues.

To accommodate everything from band, orchestra and choir performances to recitals, traditional and digital media installations, we know the building needs a vision larger than the sum of its parts.

Our design expresses each performance venue as a separate concrete mass within a transparent lobby space. We placed the 1500-seat multi-purpose performance hall, multi-modal rehearsal space, and a flexible studio theater strategically, using the gaps between these venue “objects” to let light in, and frame views out into the surrounding 16-acre landscape.

To anchor the lobby, we expressed the art gallery as a low-profile volume with an open top. Art can be displayed both inside the gallery and on its outer walls, amplifying the hard work and talent of Plano’s young creatives within and beyond the building. Floating above the entire space is a fine metal mesh, which we conceived as a bright cloud that filters daylight into the building through large apertures in the ceiling.

The Fine Arts Center will provide more than just a welcoming space for arts education. As a “crown jewel” for the district and community, it will celebrate and empower the culture-makers of tomorrow.
