Mt. Tabor Pavilion

Portland, Oregon

We developed this pro-bono conceptual design to replace the picnic pavilion of Portland’s well-visited Mt. Tabor Park—a beloved community amenity damaged by fallen trees during an ice storm. Taking cues from the historic park to bring its natural materials, light patterns, and unique forms into play while drawing inspiration from the original structure, the new pavilion design proposes a wood structure with glulam trusses and a standing-seam metal roof. Custom-perforated metal screening will bring dappled light into the space while supporting built-in wooden benches and a wall-mounted educational display. Flexible furniture arrangements will enable the pavilion’s use as an event space, a sheltered picnic area, or even an outdoor classroom.

Fully integrated into its natural site, the project envisions native plantings, volcanic stone garden walls, and bike parking in an inclusive new pavilion serving Portland’s vibrant community of parkgoers.
