The integrated arts complex is a vital node in the fine arts precinct on the Virginia Tech campus. Its location along a busy boundary between the campus and neighborhood makes it a crucial space. Now, the renovated and expanded home for music, art and drama advances the precinct’s identity within the campus and the larger community.

The renovation of a former administrative building, Henderson Hall, consolidates several previously scattered departments. These include theater, music, graphic design and art history. The 36,000-square-foot facility has faculty and graduate student offices, graphic design studios, computer labs, a lighting design studio, a scenic design studio, a lecture hall, a slide library, and multimedia presentation rooms. Acoustically isolated music faculty studios and music practice rooms fill the remainder of the renovated space.

Theatre 101, a new 8,000-square-foot black box theater, replaces an existing parking lot to the southeast of Henderson Hall. It also includes a rehearsal room, dressing rooms and support spaces. Theatre 101’s steps and lobby entrance engage the street living as a venue for exhibits and impromptu performances.

Combined, the Henderson Hall and Theater 101 Buildings are the first LEED-certified projects on the Virginia Tech campus. The campus buildings received LEED Gold certification in 2010 with help from Bora.
