Holgate Library

Portland, Oregon

The new two-story Holgate Library for Multnomah County Library in Southeast Portland will be one of the largest libraries in the county, tripling the size of the original 1971 building to accommodate one of the city’s most diverse communities. Boasting a mass timber structure, the library will offer a healthy, daylit space with ample connections to nature to provide visitors of all ages and backgrounds with an uplifting and gracious library experience.

Our process involved extensive community engagement sessions which allowed us to design the building through a Design Justice lens to authentically represent its patrons. Based on input from community and staff members, the new library will include a large play and learning area for children and families, as well as a dedicated teen room with space for technology, homework, and creative expression. Flexible programming and multiple meeting rooms will allow spaces to accommodate a range of needs and purposes, while an outdoor plaza will offer space for community members to relax and connect. The library will be equipped with the latest technology, rooftop solar paneling to offset energy use, and radiant flooring for thermal comfort.

Holgate Library’s interior design, exterior color, patterns and references to nature were publicly voted on by the community. The work of local artists will enliven the interior lobby and exterior, again drawing upon ideas from the community for design inspiration. At every turn, the design will reflect the aspirations of its future patrons to make the new library an inclusive celebration of people and place.
