Absci Biotechnology Workplace + Labs

Vancouver, WA

It's inspiring to come to work each day in this exceptional building...this collaborative setting really encourages all of us to step beyond the impossible to create new possibilities for patients.

Sean McClain, Absci Founder and CEO

The innovative new headquarters for Absci reflects the growing biotech firm’s mission to revolutionize the biopharmaceutical industry by merging AI with biology to expand the therapeutic potential of proteins. Our transformative design of a concrete warehouse into a bold and exciting facility elevates Absci’s leadership as an industry pioneer redefining the drug discovery process while also attracting new talent.

The groundbreaking scientific processes championed by Absci inspired the design concepts of the 80,000sf headquarters, which were delivered on a fast-track schedule. In science, a successful framework both supports flexibility and lays the groundwork for innovation. We translated this concept into a central spine through the facility that organizes space, collects shared amenities, and conceals systems distribution—all while opening views to the exterior.

Landing zones support informal meeting collaboration in lab and office areas and feature a Town Hall at the building’s heart that opens to a courtyard. Comprised of 60% lab bench space and 40% office space, the workplace features a range of spaces and experiences to support Absci employees in their innovative work. Bold, regionally inspired materials and color palettes maximize flexibility and experimentation to support the leading-edge company’s growth into the future.

Climate

The project decreased the need for some conditioned space by utilizing an exterior courtyard as a comfortable meeting room outside. Equipped with sun and rain protection as well as power and technology, the space functions just like any other meeting room.

Health

Absci’s fast-track schedule required finding new approaches to many traditional materials. The design team leveraged this opportunity to find better, healthier products. An example is a polyester-based acoustical tile, which was able to be cut on site without exposing occupants and installers to toxic dust. This material innovation allowed for both a faster installation and a safer indoor environment.

Equity

The building’s spatial layout prioritizes individual access to daylight by consolidating laboratories and private offices to the project’s core. This allows the large perimeter windows to provide daylight to a vast majority of occupants.
