Bora Wins Two AIA Oregon Architecture Awards for Adaptive Reuse

by Bora Architects

We’re honored to announce two AIA Oregon 2020 Architecture Award wins!

First, the Meier & Frank Building Redevelopment earned a Citation Award for its 23,000sf adaptive reuse of the first two floors of a beloved, century-old landmark in the heart of downtown Portland. The project transforms the former department store into a creative office and active retail spaces while honoring the building’s rich history and cultural significance.

Jury comments:
“This project is a great example of an inspiring rehabilitation that respects the history of the original building while clearly expressing the contemporary interventions.”

Secondly, our Metro YMCA Workplace Adaptation earned a Merit Award. Breathing new life into an iconic building we completed more than 40 years ago, we adapted the building’s core and shell (interior architecture by Lever) to support a modern workplace environment.

Jury comments:
“This is a glorious example of adaptive reuse. The architect wisely kept all the best parts of the original curved building and created a new office space that is a glistening modernist gem.”

Congratulations to all our collaborators on these two remarkable projects!
