On July 23 Bora Associate Principal Amy Running presented our Portland State University Vernier Science Center project at the 2024 SCUP Annual Conference alongside partners from Portland State University–student Athena Rilatos, Jason Franklin (Associate Vice President for Planning, Construction & Real Estate), and Todd Rosenstiel (Dean, College of Liberal Arts & Sciences).
Our session, entitled “Diversifying the STEM Experience Through Integrated Planning,” shared how our team’s outreach-driven process led to an inclusive science facility dedicated to empowering a more diverse STEM workforce. By engaging BIPOC student voices throughout design with intention and authenticity we were able to dramatically shift design outcomes, challenging institutional norms and broadening perspectives in science education.
