Bora Designing PCC’s First CLT Project as Community Anchor

by Bora Architects

Bora is collaborating with Portland Community College and Andersen Construction on the Portland Metropolitan Workforce Training Center. The new Center will be anchor for the community in Northeast Portland’s racially diverse Cully neighborhood. Replacing PCAC’s existing facility, this expanded Center will create opportunities for low-income families and residents, transforming lives through education and connections to family-wage jobs.

Guided by trauma-informed design and Design Justice principles, “the design seeks to cultivate a culture of collective care by creating restorative and humanizing spaces that connect to nature and celebrate cultural diversity,” says Bora Principal Jeanie Lai.

The design of the 50,000sf Center featuring classrooms, a career center, a community room, and surrounding greenspace will be the College’s first project to pioneer a mass timber structure. As a healthy, sustainable building material, cross-laminated timber will contribute to a friendly, welcoming environment for PCC and the NE Portland communities it serves.
