African American Museum & Research Library Design Unveiled

by Bora Architecture & Interiors

Bora, in collaboration with STORYN, is thrilled to be leading the design of the African American Museum & Research Library (AAMRL) in West Palm Beach, Florida. Located on the site of the historic Roosevelt High School, the new AAMRL will serve as a beacon of cultural pride, economic opportunity, and educational empowerment for the Coleman Park community and surrounding neighborhoods.

The 37,000-square-foot AAMRL will honor Roosevelt High School’s history, stories, and community, celebrating Black excellence while taking cues from the building’s original form and lush courtyards. The design is organized around a “Connected Porches” framework, a series of indoor and outdoor thresholds that extend the legacy of front porch culture as spaces of dialogue, exchange, and shared authorship.

Aiming to center the community’s accomplishments and resilience through the years, the AAMRL is envisioned as a destination of gathering and celebration, offering exhibition galleries, a research library, and community-focused areas supporting special exhibits, oral history initiatives, and educational programs. The porch concept will allow these programs to spill outward, enhancing community visibility while reinforcing the museum as a cultural institution and meaningful civic space.
