Bora has worked with the Newberg School District for over two decades, including designing several ground-up schools. This project includes new classrooms, an alternative high school, a commons/cafeteria, a media center, offices, a competition gym and a free-standing 550-seat performing arts center.
For the high school, the challenge was to update a 1960s design to support the modern curricular needs of Newberg students, and improve comfort for all the building occupants. We transformed an underutilized courtyard into a new academic and social center that united core buildings. Students can access counseling services, grab lunch, or work in small group areas, all within an open, light-filled space. We also remodeled the instructional spaces to form five “schools within schools.” To avoid disrupting the teaching and learning taking place, we worked closely with the contractor to plan phasing and constructability reviews that allowed school to remain in session throughout.
Our efficient design strategies reduced operating costs, improved the indoor environment, and increase the long-term value to the community. The durable material palette includes terrazzo stairs, linoleum flooring, and bamboo doors and wall paneling. The result is a school transformed, with a warm and inviting atmosphere that enhances the lives of the teachers and students.
