New Work Starts at Texas A&M and Michigan State University

by Ashley Cartmel

Bora is excited to commence work on two new projects.  Building on the success of the Learning Innovation Center (LINC) the firm designed for Oregon State University, we will be working with Texas A&M in College Station to create a 21st Century Classroom Building for its campus.  The project will benefit from a prominent site along Wellborn Road at the juncture of the historic core and western campus and adjacent to the Simpson Drill Field and Memorial Student Center.  Like LINC, the 116,000 square foot new facility, with seats for 2,200 students, will feature classrooms that embrace the concept of teaching in the round. This arena style learning environment has proved immensely popular for both student and teachers at Oregon State, and the University is currently engaged in a multi-year study analyzing student engagement and learning outcomes in these new classrooms.  The 21st Century Classroom Building will be a pioneering facility for Texas A&M, benefiting from and adding to the latest body of research on innovative academic spaces.  Perkins + Will (Houston) is serving as the Architect of Record.

Our long relationship with Michigan State University continues with the renovation of, and expansion to, its School of Music.  Since 2001, Bora has masterplanned a new campus arts precinct and completed the renovation of MSU’s 180-seat Cook Recital Hall and 550-seat Fairchild Theatre.  The 35,000 square foot addition to the School of Music — which Bora completed the concept design for in 2015 and which recently secured major donor funding — will include new rehearsal, teaching, and practice spaces.
