Muji Opens Flagship West Coast Store in Meier & Frank Building

by Bora Architects

Bora has been hard at work on the renovation and modernization of Portland’s historic Meier & Frank building, from the basement to the fifth floor. As we near completion, we’re also celebrating the grand opening of the revitalized landmark’s new anchor tenant, Japanese lifestyle brand and retailer Muji, just in time for the holiday season.

We teamed with Muji’s design architect Super Potato to complete the design and construction of their new 12,000 sf space, bringing our understanding of Northwest culture, connections to local vendors and consultants, and of course our deep familiarity with the Meier & Frank building itself. As their flagship west coast store, Muji wanted to make sure the design was distinctive. For the design team, this meant marrying their no-brand, high-quality Japanese aesthetic with elements they love about Portland – locally sourced materials, reclaimed wood, an in-store coffee shop (of course), as well an eagerness to work with local partners.

Bora assisted in contractor selection, adding R&H Construction to the team based on their enthusiasm, experience in high-quality retail, and confidence in their ability to handle the schedule and complexity of a challenging project. Axiom Custom Products were also a key part of the team, responsible for the heavy timbers and custom fixtures that fill the space.

The whole design and construction crew did a fantastic job, and we’re thrilled to have such a stylish new neighbor just blocks from our office. So if you’re in Portland and want to brave the holiday crowds, we encourage you to check Muji out!
