For this Nike project, we transformed what was once a sea of a permanently divided cubicles with dim fluorescent lighting into an open, bright and collaborative space in line with their brand’s focus on innovation and science through a design centric lens.
Replacing a dark and underused 16’ wide hallway at the center of the space, we created a central zone of collaboration spaces and team rooms wrapped in a dynamic powdercoated perforated aluminum that integrated brand imagery. This collaboration zone, dubbed The Zipper, included very few walls and allowed for a visual connection from one side of the floor to the other. By placing the collaboration at the center, communal activities and meetings are celebrated and create an energetic buzz in the work environment. Additionally, the positioning of the zipper shifted workstations closer to the full-length band of exterior windows. The new influx of natural light blends with the 100% uplight fixtures that reduce glare and allow for ideal visual collaboration. In order to best use the existing space, some enclosed rooms were converted to focus and phone rooms for more private work.
We kept the materials simple, light, and bright, focusing on a neutral palette with pops of color for wayfinding and special furniture. The concrete ceiling and all exposed utilities were painted white, while the concrete floor and columns are unadorned. Upholstered booths were built for individual or one on one tasks with more privacy. The library lives in the corner of the floor plate with a direct view to the exterior and more acoustic separation, creating a zone for heads down work.
